Winona Laura Horowitz professionally known by the name Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. The name of her parents was derived from the town she grew up in. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors and editors. Ryder's dad came from an ethnically Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish.
